Christmas Cottage Break in East England

Have a healthy outdoor break over Christmas. Stay in a holiday cottage and arrange days out cycling and walking.

Much of the eastern side of England is low lying. The fens of east Anglia and Cambridgeshire have flat salt marsh landscapes. A holiday sailing industry has been built up over the years in the Norfolk Broads where salt pans have been dredged to keep the waterways open.

Rainfall is quite low on the east side of England which makes the area attractive for holidays. The flat terrain makes it most attractive for cycling with the resulting network of cycle paths in Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Rent a cosy cottage on the east side of England and take the family out and about in the woods and along the coast. Deserted beaches can look simply stunning under a cold winter sun.

Everywhere looks festive around Christmas. People create festive displays on windowsills, adorn front doors and light up their houses. Christmas brightens up the darkest of nights and helps us through the winter.

Christmas near Rochester in Kent, south east England

Rochester puts on a show for Christmas. A Christmas Market and Dickensian Festival attracts the crowds.

The town of Rochester in Kent is well known for its associations with Charles Dickens and an annual Dickensian Festival in early December.

Christmas markets are held in Rochester in Saturdays and Sundays until mid December in the gardens of Rochester Castle. Whilst there, pop into the cathedral to see the church in its Christmas finery.

Canterbury in Kent has a world renowned cathedral. Carols for Christmas are held on Christmas Eve. The cathedral stands in impressive grounds and is worth a visit. Not only will you find history but also works of art, stunning stained glass, a gift shop and concerts all year round.

It is a pity that Christmas Markets tend to be a little early and do not coincide with Christmas as they do on the Continent. For those who love Christmas Markets and might enjoy a short break abroad, Krakow Christmas Market in Poland is a sensation for all senses. Free concerts are held in the evenings, hot food and mulled wine stalls abound. Lots of good quality crafts and demonstrations. It's a leader in Christmas Markets.

Christmas in the east

The east of England is noticeably drier than the west. This is good when going out and about sightseeing over Christmas. It also means less snow which is perhaps less advantageous but at least you are unlikely to get stuck in snow drifts whilst driving.
