Christmas cottage break in North-west England

Christmas can be very lively if staying in a city in the north west or tranquil out in the Cumbrian hills.

christmas holiday cottages in north west englandNorth West England really is the perfect blend of city living and countryside, making it the perfect holiday destination for anyone looking to be in easy reach of both of these. This really helps to make it an extra special destination for a Christmas break too, with the shops perfect for all of that last minute shopping or those emergency presents that you’d forgotten about, while the beautiful countryside ensures that you are in blissful surroundings and have peace and quiet to be able to really chill out while you’re away in your holiday cottage.

Many people worry about going away at Christmas - about not seeing their family on Christmas day or whether they’ll have enough to do while they are away so you really want to make sure that your break is perfect. If you’re willing to sacrifice not seeing your family on Christmas day then you don’t want to just settle for a mediocre break, you want something that everyone will enjoy.

Festive activities

Once you settle into your self-catering Christmas cottage, the most popular activities in the north west are walking, sightseeing, shopping, meals out, ice skating and pantomimes.

While not everyone would want to do much around the festive season, there are, of course, those people who don’t like just lying around during the holidays and who want to get outside and enjoy what their holiday destination has to offer. But, if you’ve never been to the area before, it can be hard to know where to go or what you can do especially around Christmas, so here is a handy list for anyone looking for Christmas events for while they are on holiday.

Albert Square Manchester1. Manchester Christmas Market - Manchester’s Christmas market is often described as one of the best in Europe, selling an absolutely massive variety of things. Whatever you can think of, this market is sure to sell it, and the stunning wooden chalets really give the city a really magical and Scandinavian feel, making you feel as though you should be plodding through the snow in Sweden, not the streets of Manchester!

2. Liverpool Christmas Market - Along with the famous Liverpool One shopping centre, Liverpool also plays host to a Christmas market which offers food, beer and handmade gifts. Whether you want to visit the market or simply buy your last minute presents, you’re bound to find the perfect shop for all of your needs in this city which was once Capital of Culture.

3. Ice Skating - Ice skating rinks are set up all over the North West during the festive season, allowing you to try out this fun sport. It’s perfect for introducing your children (or yourself) into a new sport which you may then grow to love and is also brilliant for ensuring that children are suitably tired out that even Christmas excitement won’t keep them awake!

4. Theatres - The North West has plenty of theatres to offer, the Lowry in Salford and the Empire in Liverpool to name just two. These show a variety of musicals, pantomimes and ballets throughout the festive season which are perfect for the whole family, so it is really just a case of checking what is on nearest to you and making sure that you have your tickets!
